Before You Start a Parasite Cleanse, Read This
Parasite cleanses seem to be everywhere right now.
And to be fair — parasites, gut infections, and microbial imbalances can absolutely contribute to symptoms like:
bloating
fatigue
digestive issues
skin changes
nutrient depletion
brain fog
immune dysfunction
As a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, I do sometimes see parasites and dysbiotic patterns on functional lab testing.
But here’s the part that concerns me:
More and more women are jumping into aggressive parasite protocols without understanding whether their body is actually ready for them.
And in some cases…that can backfire.
What I Used to See in Clinic
I used to see this pattern all the time.
Women would come into the clinic after trying multiple parasite cleanses, rotating through different blends and protocols — convinced they just hadn’t found the “right” one yet.
And meanwhile, they were:
under-eating
running on caffeine
over-exercising
sleeping poorly
bloated
exhausted
relying on stress hormones to get through the day
Many weren’t even eating enough to properly support detoxification, hormone balance, or healing in the first place.
But because the conversation online is often so focused on “killing pathogens,” they missed some of the most foundational things their body actually needed.
And this is where I think we need to be more thoughtful.
Because sometimes the body doesn’t need a more aggressive protocol.
Sometimes it needs:
nourishment
mineral support
blood sugar stability
better drainage and elimination
nervous system support
In other words: More capacity before more intensity.
Why Some Cleanses Can Make You Feel Worse
When the body is already stressed, depleted, inflamed, or struggling with digestion and elimination, adding strong antimicrobial herbs can sometimes create more stress on the system rather than less.
And often, the symptoms people interpret as “die-off” can also be a sign that the body is overwhelmed.
Things like:
worsening fatigue
headaches
skin flare-ups
constipation
increased bloating
poor sleep
anxiety or irritability
don’t automatically mean the cleanse is “working.”
Sometimes they’re a sign the body doesn’t have the resources or resilience to process what’s being pushed through it.
This is especially true for high-functioning women who are already compensating more than they realize.
Women who are still functioning…
but tired, wired, bloated, running on stress hormones, and pushing through symptoms every day.
Because the body doesn’t heal best under more pressure.
It heals when it feels supported enough to respond.
The Functional Medicine Perspective
In functional medicine and FDN, we try to ask a different question:
Why is the body vulnerable in the first place?
Instead of only focusing on killing pathogens, we look at:
digestion
stress load
mineral balance
detoxification capacity
blood sugar regulation
nervous system health
immune resilience
Because the goal isn’t just temporary symptom relief.
The goal is creating a body that is more resilient overall.
This Doesn’t Mean Parasites Aren’t Real
They absolutely can be.
But not every symptom points to parasites.
And not every body benefits from jumping immediately into an aggressive cleanse.
This is why testing and personalization matter.
Two women can have similar symptoms — and need completely different approaches.
One may truly need antimicrobial support.
Another may need to stabilize blood sugar, improve digestion, support elimination, and rebuild mineral reserves first.
This is why I’m cautious about one-size-fits-all protocols.
The Bigger Picture
I think many people are looking for answers because they know something feels off. I understand that.
But healing rarely comes from panic or extremes.
It usually comes from understanding your patterns, supporting your body consistently, and building resilience over time.
When the body has the resources it needs, it will heal.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve been jumping from cleanse to cleanse trying to feel better, this isn’t about shame.
It’s about stepping back and asking a deeper question:
What does your body actually need right now?
Sometimes the next step isn’t another aggressive protocol.
Sometimes it’s rebuilding the foundation first.
And often, that’s where real healing begins.
If you’re still functioning… but dealing with bloating, fatigue, digestive changes, or feeling “off,” I created a free guide called:
Still Functioning… but Wired, Tired and Bloated
It walks through the patterns I see most often in high-functioning women over 40 — and what your body may actually be asking for.
