Maybe I Was Never Broken
Or maybe my body was simply trying to protect me.
For years, I thought there was something wrong with me.
I wasn't the loudest person in the room.
Networking events made me uncomfortable.
I replayed conversations long after they ended, wondering if I'd said the wrong thing.
I admired people who seemed naturally confident and outgoing. I kept thinking, If I could just fix this part of myself...
So I tried.
I read books.
I attended workshops.
I pushed myself outside my comfort zone.
And while I grew in many ways, there was always a part of me that felt like it was working harder than everyone else just to feel comfortable in the world.
Years later, when I became a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner and started using Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA), I learned about something called a calcium shell.
What is a calcium shell?
In HTMA, a calcium shell is a pattern where calcium is elevated in the hair. Practitioners interpret this as one possible sign that the body has adapted to prolonged stress by becoming more protective or less responsive. It's not a medical diagnosis, and it doesn't describe your personality. It's simply one way of looking at how the body may have responded over time.
Whether or not every aspect of this concept proves true scientifically isn't really the point for me.
What struck me was the idea that the body adapts.
Sometimes brilliantly.
Sometimes in ways that help us survive difficult seasons.
Looking back...
When I learned about this pattern, I wasn't looking for an excuse.
I wasn't trying to explain away my personality.
Instead, I found myself wondering:
What if my body wasn't working against me?
What if it had been working incredibly hard to protect me?
That question changed everything.
Because instead of asking,
"What's wrong with me?"
I started asking,
"What has my body been trying to do for me?"
I stopped trying to fix myself.
I still believe in personal growth.
I still enjoy learning.
I still push myself in healthy ways.
But I no longer approach my body like a project that needs fixing.
Today, I focus on supporting it.
Eating enough.
Managing stress.
Prioritizing sleep.
Supporting mineral balance.
Moving in ways that feel good.
Creating more capacity instead of constantly demanding more from myself.
Maybe you've felt this too.
Maybe you've spent years wondering why you feel more overwhelmed than everyone else.
Why you replay conversations.
Why you need more recovery time.
Why you're exhausted even though you're "doing everything right."
I'm not suggesting that a mineral imbalance explains everything. Social anxiety, neurodiversity, temperament, life experiences, and mental health are all complex and deserve thoughtful, individualized understanding.
What I am suggesting is this:
Sometimes the conversation shouldn't start with,
"How do I fix myself?"
Sometimes it starts with,
"How can I better support the body that's been carrying me all these years?"
That's why I love HTMA.
Not because it has all the answers.
But because it invites us to stop seeing symptoms as failures and start looking for patterns.
Patterns that help us ask better questions.
Patterns that remind us our bodies are often adapting, not betraying us.
And perhaps most importantly...
Patterns that invite a little more curiosity—and a little more compassion—for ourselves.
