Natural Pest Protection: How to Enjoy Summer Without the Bug Bites
Summer is finally here, bringing warmer weather, backyard BBQs, evenings on the patio, and time spent outdoors. Unfortunately, summer also brings mosquitoes, ticks, and other biting insects.
If you love spending time outside but are concerned about the ingredients found in conventional insect repellents, there are natural strategies that may help reduce your exposure to bug bites while allowing you to enjoy the season.
Why Insect Repellent Matters
If you're not every mosquito's favourite meal (mosquitoes do tend to prefer people with blood type O), you may think a few bites aren't a big deal.
However, protecting yourself from biting insects is important for more than comfort.
Mosquitoes and ticks can carry diseases such as:
West Nile virus
Lyme disease
Rocky Mountain spotted fever
Zika virus (in some regions)
Malaria when travelling to certain parts of the world
Even a single bite from an infected insect can pose health risks, making prevention an important part of staying healthy outdoors.
Additional Ways to Reduce Bug Bites
In addition to using natural repellents, these simple habits can help:
Avoid spending long periods outdoors at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
Remove standing water from your property, as mosquitoes breed in stagnant water.
Use screens on windows and doors.
Wear lightweight, long-sleeved clothing when insect activity is high.
What About Ticks?
Ticks have become increasingly common in many areas and can transmit Lyme disease and other infections.
To reduce your risk of tick bites:
Avoid walking through tall grass and dense shrubs whenever possible.
Stay in the centre of trails when hiking.
Wear long sleeves, long pants, and closed footwear in wooded areas.
Tuck pant legs into socks when walking in tick-prone areas.
Perform a full body tick check after spending time outdoors.
Check pets carefully before bringing them inside.
Remove attached ticks promptly using fine-tipped tweezers, avoiding squeezing the body of the tick.
Natural Tick Support with Essential Oils
Certain essential oils may help discourage ticks and other insects when used appropriately.
Cedarwood Essential Oil
Cedarwood is commonly used in natural pest control products and may help repel ticks. Dilute properly before applying to the skin.
When using essential oils around pets, always exercise caution. Some animals are sensitive to essential oils, so I recommend consulting your veterinarian or an expert such as Dr. Janet Roarke, the essential oils veterinarian before using essential oils.
I don't personally include cedarwood in my own outdoor blend because Dave is sensitive to it—we learned that lesson the hard way and weren't following the safety guidelines listed below!
Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender's pleasant scent may help deter insects while also supporting relaxation. It can be blended with other essential oils to create a natural outdoor spray.
Is Conventional Insect Repellent Safe?
Many people choose natural alternatives because they wish to reduce their exposure to synthetic chemicals.
Health Canada regulates insect repellents containing DEET and considers them safe when used as directed.
Some people choose to limit their exposure based on concerns raised by organizations such as the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and their own preferences.
Whether you choose conventional or natural products, always follow label directions and use only as needed.
Plants That May Help Repel Mosquitoes
Adding certain plants to your garden or patio may help create a less inviting environment for insects.
Some popular options include:
Lavender
Basil
Catnip
Bee balm
Lemon balm
Lemongrass
Rosemary
Citronella grass
Lemon thyme
As an added bonus, many of these plants smell wonderful and attract beneficial pollinators.
My Favourite Natural Bug Spray Recipe
If you prefer a simple homemade option, here's a natural bug spray I use during the summer months.
DIY Essential Oil Bug Spray
Ingredients
2 oz (60 mL) distilled water
2 tablespoons witch hazel
10 drops Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil
10 drops Lavender essential oil
10 drops Peppermint essential oil
5 drops Lemon and/or citronella essential oil*
Combine all ingredients in a glass spray bottle and shake well before each use. Spray on exposed skin, clothing, or around outdoor seating areas as needed.
Why these oils?
Lemon Eucalyptus: One of the most researched natural ingredients for mosquito protection.
Lavender: Helps deter insects while also soothing the skin.
Peppermint: Provides a fresh scent and may help discourage mosquitoes and other insects.
Lemon: Adds a clean, refreshing scent and may support the overall repellent blend.
*Citrus oils can increase sun sensitivity. Avoid direct sun exposure on areas where lemon oil has been applied, or substitute citronella if preferred.
If you'd rather skip the DIY route, TerraShield® is my go-to ready-made outdoor blend for both people and pets. (pictured below)
A Few Safety Notes
Always patch test before applying to larger areas.
Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
Use caution when applying essential oils to children and pets.
Consult your healthcare provider before using essential oils if you are pregnant or nursing.
